Job Description

Our client, a pioneering UK-based SME specialising in advanced maritime technology, is seeking a Business Development Manager to drive strategic growth within the defence sector. This role will play a pivotal part in supporting regional leads, engaging with stakeholders such as the US Department of Defence, and delivering innovative solutions to complex challenges. Key Responsibilities

  • System Ownership: Accountability for full mechanical systems from concept to delivery, ensuring functionality, quality, and performance.
  • Innovative Design: Analyse design requirements and develop creative mechanical solutions using advanced CAD software.
  • Simulation and Validation: Substantiate designs through analytical methods, FEA software, and physical testing to ensure performance and safety in the maritime environment.
  • Material Expertise: Select and evaluate materials considering factors such as corrosion resistance, weight optimisation, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with electrical engineers, naval architects, and control systems engineers for seamless system integration.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Rapidly learn and iterate through prototyping, simulation, and validation processes.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and comprehensive technical documentation, including specifications, engineering drawings, and reports.
  • Compliance: Design systems in alignment with relevant marine industry standards and regulatory requirements, with experience in class approval (e.g., Lloyd’s or DNV-GL) being a plus.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to tackle complex design challenges.
  • Courage to propose innovative solutions and challenge conventional thinking.
  • Proficiency in 3D modelling software such as Inventor or SolidWorks.
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes relevant to maritime technology.
  • Expertise in material selection for marine environments, including corrosion mitigation technologies.
  • Confident in design justification through market research, hand calculations, simulations, and physical testing.
  • Experience designing for regulatory compliance and class approval.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to produce accurate technical drawings and models.
  • Experience in prototyping, testing, and iterative design processes.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (advanced degrees or certifications are a plus).
  • Experience in pneumatic system design and complex mechanical linkages.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with maritime or defence industry standards.
  • Knowledge of novel corrosion mitigation methodologies.
  • Practical experience in creating designs for rapid prototyping and testing.
