This role will be a great fit for an experienced electrical engineer with equipment build experience and/or skills in the electrical design of machines/industrial equipment. Experience in BOM generation, design of electrical systems, and understanding electrical/mechanical system integration are essential.

You should also be proficient in using AutoCAD Electrical, have strong project management skills, and be a self-starter. Ideally, you’ll have a broad knowledge of electrical and electronic control systems, e.g., industrial controllers, PLCs, AC inverters, experience of working in a highly regulated environment, and a background in fault finding complex electrical systems.

Required skills and Experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and specify electrical systems for industrial vehicles, including specifying fuses and cable selection.
  • Work with various equipment, considering different types of cables (signal, power, screened) and their placement to avoid electrical noise and interference.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, including ATEX or Ex environments.
  • Integrate gas detection systems and manage cables that go into boxes or are sealed in composites.
  • Modify existing wiring looms, ensuring accurate logging of all changes and adherence to OEM data.
  • Utilise AutoCAD for electrical design tasks.
  • Creation of project specification documents.
  • Component selection for integration into original machine electrical systems.
  • Creation of electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical to achieve both vehicle functionality and meet legislative requirements.
  • Contribute to the design of components to be packaged onto vehicles considering extreme space constraints.
  • Specify suitable Ex certified primary traction batteries for equipment.
  • Define electrical enclosure layouts and population.
  • Conceive design solutions to achieve optimal execution cost.
  • Specify product test requirements to support compliance activities.
  • Produce documentation to support product certification and prepare product risk assessments as required.
  • Provide pre and post-sale customer technical support.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and work instructions, including health and safety.
  • Promote and adhere to the company’s values and behaviours.
  • Carry out other reasonable duties requested by management.

  • Familiarity with industry standards and their application.
  • Practical experience in specifying and selecting electrical components for varied equipment.
  • Ability to work in electrically noisy environments, ensuring proper cable separation and shielding.
  • Knowledge of gas detection systems and safe wiring practices in hazardous environments.
  • Broad knowledge of electrical and electronic control systems, e.g., industrial controllers, PLCs, AC inverters.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated environment.
  • Background in fault finding complex electrical systems.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working in ATEX or Ex environments.
  • A background as an Applications Engineer or Electrical Design Engineer.
  • Practical, hands-on experience in an engineering role, with the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
  • CAN protocol knowledge.
  • Exposure to CE marking and creation of technical construction files.
  • Knowledge of EMC relating to machines and control techniques.
  • Hazardous area regulations and design standards knowledge.

Salary & Benefits

  • £35,000 – £50,000
  • Benefits include 25 days of holiday with the option to purchase additional days, a 5% employer pension contribution, life assurance, a health cash plan, an employee assistance programme, and various wellbeing initiatives.
